Only a few months after his arrest 12 2008, Bernie Madoff took a plea deal.

Madoff's former lawyer, Ira Lee Sorkin, stopped by "The Early Show" and explained what motivated his client to reach an agreement so quickly.

"His wife and family. There is a good possibility that he might have been out for a much longer period of time under conditions of bail and later pleaded, because I think, at the time he confessed to his sons He knew it was going to die in prison. So there is a possibility that could have been left out, "Sorkin said Rebecca Jimenez and Chris Wragge. "However, the pressure on his wife, the pressure on his family was so intense, they were vicious anti-Semitic threats, threats of death, to relieve pressure on his family and especially his wife, chose to plead. And the time it was declared and was returned to jail, satellite dishes gone, the helicopter disappeared, disappeared journalists. "

When asked if he was inspired to make a deal, Sorkin said: "That was his decision."

"As for suicide [attempt], we have heard from Ruth, I know there are some people who believe there may be some truth, perhaps not 100 percent certain. Did you know that Bernie, Bernie or suicidal thinking at that time? "Wragge said.

"I knew I was in a pretty bad state. I'm not qualified to say when you are suicidal or not. But I knew I was in a terrible, terrible," said Sorkin.

When asked if he was not surprised when these revelations came out, Sorkin said: "Well, I knew about the attempted before."

"We talked about Bernie's worried about his family and take the plea, as mentioned Rebecca. Concern for Ruth and the children. Have you ever prove or show sympathy for the thousands of people whose lives are ruined?" Wragge asked.

"Oh, yes. Not that I once believed, but of course. He certainly did in conversations with me, I will not go into. He had great remorse. I felt I could get out. He could never leave it . But it is in a spiral and you know the rest, "said Sorkin.
